The flower´s diameter is 7 mm approximately, so you can guess how large is the insect...

El diámetro de la flor es de 7 mm aproximadamente, así que ustedes pueden estimar el tamaño del insecto...

Una pregunta acerca de estas hormigas - Question with regards to these ants

Estaba hace un rato haciendo unas pruebas con mi nuevo lente macro, cuando me dí cuenta que entre las florecitas de este cactus había unas hormigas muy pequeñas.

I was taking some test photographs with my new macro lens when I realized that there were a few very small black ants wandering among the little flowers of this cactus.

Estas hormigas negras, son muy esbeltas y miden aproximadamente dos milímetros. Es decir, son muy pequeñitas. Observando las fotografías me sorprendió ver algo que no había visto directamente... Si miran detenidamente, van a ver que las hormigas están haciendo algo con unas esferitas que crecen en el cactus.

These black ants are very slender and they are 2mm long approximately. That is, they are really small ants. Looking closely at the pictures I saw something I couldn´t see while taking the photographs... If you look into the picture you can observe that the little ants are working upon some white spheres growing in the cactus.

Recuerden que las hormiguitas tienen dos milímetros de largo, por lo tanto estas esferitas deben medir aproximadamente 0.75 mm.

Do not forget that these little ants are 2 mm long, therefore the spheres are very small indeed, 0.75 mm approximately.

Mi pregunta a todos aquellos que sepan de hormigas, sus especies y sus costumbres: ¿Qué son las esferitas que produce este cactus, qué están haciendo las hormigas y por qué? Parece ser un caso de convivencia (simbiosis) entre las hormigas y el cactus. 

Now my question to someone who may know about ants and their lives: What these small white spheres growing in the cactus are, what the little black ants are doing and why?

It looks to me that the ants and the cactus are living in some kind of symbiotic relationship.

Ojalá alguien lo lea y lo pueda aclarar, pues ha despertado mi curiosidad y espero que la de ustedes también.
